SMACM012: Birthday Girl - Rituals

Yesterday SMAC music launched "Rituals" our twelfth release, and the debut EP by Cape Town Trio Birthday Girl. It's a really fantastic, diverse collection of songs. Truly original, I won't even hazard a guess at what genre's I might be able to attach to the EP. Instead let me just direct your ears to the links below so you can have your own hard time trying to find words that match these sounds.

For easy repeat listens, head over to our bandcamp and download the EP. As always, the digital release is out on "pay what you want" model. Some kind of interesting physical release is on the cards too!

Birthday Girl are celebrating the launch of Rituals with their first live show on Sunday the 31st of May at Straight No Chaser. after many months of rehersal, it's going to be fantastic to see the guys unveiling thier live show - I think it's going to be something very special.

SMAC 750!

Well, this is it, my 750th post on my dear old blog.

I've been watching this milestone approaching for months. In May I posted animal call 749. From there, I planned a super elaborate 750th post, catching you up on the massive new developments in my life over the past while. It's been a crazy time this past while, with a lot of big stuff happening, so much in fact that I never did get through that monster "this is my life now" post between May and now. Now, with massive news on the horizon, I just have to get past this milestone so I can share that in SMAC 751!

So yeah, happy 750th post to me! Thanks to everyone that's been along for the ride at any point over the past 7 years, it's been swell! And now, let me leave you with this single update from Bensville:
I HAVE KITTENS!

You are invited to all kinds of awesome!

Super exciting show this one!

Cape Town's lovely Beatenberg are coming for a visit up north and as a part of a pretty extensive tour, the unbeatable Ri Botha has put together something really special! I can quite safely say this has to be one of the most excellent lineup's I've been lucky enough to be a part of all year!

Joining the Cape Town Trio, Ri has enlisted the super power's of SMAC-darling Vampire9000 and genre-warping art-machine known as The Brother Moves On! The lineup will be completed by Ri spinning a set under his Plaat Japie moniker, plus DJ-goodness from A Million things and your's truly!

I can not stress enough how good a show this is going to be!

Interesting side note: almost to the day, this party will correspond to my DJ-birthday! 7 years ago, somewhere in late October 2005, I played my first DJ set alongside my dear friend; Riaan Botha. This debut Sass-set was at a Secret Party in a now dead venue called the Horror Cafe, a space that, after some changes over the years is now called Shikisha and just happens to be where we'll be having this particular grand old time come Saturday night! So, not only is this gonna be a gig of most wonderful proportions, it will also be a very very apt DJ birthday for this old Sassquatch. Happy birthday to me!

Good Weekend: Noodlebox and the Crusades crusades

Not a whole bunch went down this weekend. On Fridat night Phil and I went through to The Bioscope. They were hosting their monthly Noodlebox night and this month they were screening cult favourite Battle Royale. I love this film. It's Anime meet Kubrick approach to cinema is just too cool. Seeing it on a big screen while eating a box of chow mein was a pretty damn awesome way to spend a Friday night that Phil and I topped off by hanging out with our homeboy Louis Theroux. On Saturday morning I did some driving around, delivering Crusades posters to my favourite spots around town. Hit up 70 Juta, Ke Ai, Deerhunter, The Street and Wolves. Dropped by the Gautrain Station to collect Matt Suttner who just got in from a trip to Cape Town. Rocked a great lunch and followed it up with a slightly too long nap. Then headed through to Annette's flat for birthday celebrations of the most fun variety. Awesome snacks, awesomer tunes and even more awesome company the night was just great.

I mostly spent Sunday working on visuals for the EP launch. Why exactly I'm blogging about animating Franci drawings and chopping up clips of silent German movies I don't know. I guess that's just what went down. Oh yeah, and did I mention I got to play a bit of Anja's Valentine's gift to me? Too cool.

400th post! My Year in Lists! So Many Animal Call serieseses!

Wwwwoooooooo!!! Congratulations! You're reading the 400th Animal Call! Just wait till you see what you've won! To commemorate this most momentous of occasions I thought I'd do something special. Tying in with January's on-going listing of my favourite things from 2010, here's the first ever complete list of all the different series's I've been doing posts under over the past year. In keeping with Free Music Friday I've also (where relevant) provided links for downloads of the songs that have inspired each different series. With a title taken from a song by the same band that inspired the name of this blog, this seems like a good place to start. "Hooray for Humans" posts are focused on good news about my favourite local bands, producers and record labels. The title I stole from Art Brut is pretty self-explanatory. "Good Weekend" posts are report-backs on what I've been up to over the past weekend. Generally the posts span from Thursday night gigs to Sunday evening chillouts. At their most interesting a Good Weekend could, for example, be an exhibition on Thursday, VJing with a band on Friday, a DJ set on Saturday and trip to Chinatown on a Sunday. At it's geekiest it'll just be about me reading comics and playing video games all weekend. A far less self-explanatory series title is "ACSBSATTP". Back in 2009 (frustrated by what a pathetic job I'd been doing of updating this blog) I proclaimed that "Animal Calls should be short and to the point". From there ACSBSATTP became a home for one liners, quotes and one-off photos. A bunch less obscure than ACSBSATTP is "Link Highlight". These are simply posts about the sites list under this blog's "Animal Words" section. At best these post are concise explanations why I think you should visit a specific link, at worst they're two part epics with me fanning out about how awesome some people can be. With a title lifted from a lyric by my 2nd favourite band of the last decade, "Days Like Television" posts are built around video clips. Usually a music video by a local band and bonus clip of cat related cuteness. Titled after the very sorely missed Mae Shi, "We do this all the time" posts are always just photos, generally snapped at gigs I've played or danced at. Sometimes, on a Friday, I'm lucky enough to be able to share a mix made by myself or one of the awesome local DJs in our community. It's not the namesake of this series, but let me take this opportunity to again share my favourite mix that fell under "Free Mix Friday" over the past year: The fuel that drives this blog is the sheer amount of awesome little events people put together in Pretoria and Joburg week to week. From intimate Sshhh acoustic shows to out of control KRNGY freak-outs to sold out Griet dance parties, every week there's always at least one awesome show to be featured in "You Are Invited". One of my first posts on this blog was me saying how I was obsessed with a music video by a UK band called Johnny Foreigner. Little I know that in a month I'd be flown to London, get to see the band live and become friends with the ghosts. And while the experience of befriending one of my favourite bands was one of the most exciting things ever, what grew out of that has been one of the most rewarding thing I've ever been involved in. In February last year I joined the band, playing visuals on a 5 date South African tour which was later documented in pretty ridiculous detail across the 40 part "We Pray for Moments like this" series. Later on in the year we were re-united, playing 16 shows across the US in support of one of our favourite acts, Los Campesinos. So far I've done a super-crap job of blogging about our adventures through The States, but I have tons of photos and stories to share in the "Foreigner's in America" series.
And leaving South Africa to undertake the adventures that will become the "Foreigners in America" series resulted directly in the creation of our final installment "Blog Annex". While on a bus from NYC to the fantastic world of Philadelphia, I logged onto the blog and discovered that in my absence Anja had hacked in and taken over. Posting on her own expeditions over here, Anja kept So Many Animal Calls alive and well while I was too busy being a Foreigner to do it myself.

Well that's it. If you are reading this; thank you for reading this. Here's to another 400 Animal Calls!

(Really) Good Weekend. Birthdayman and the Parachute Pants

This past weekend was pretty much as awesome as a weekend can ever hope to be.

It started off with "Get a Room", the night were Us Kids Know convinced Eyes Like Mirrors and Tennyson Extended to invade the "cigar lounge" of a very seedy hotel and play music through their own amps and nothing else. This whole "fuck-renting-a-PA-or-playing-on-a-stage" strategy was a total experiment and it payed off. Massively.

Without a doubt one of my very favourite gigs of the year, each band set up in a different part of the shady Sunningdale's bar. Tennyson grabbed the most shady spot - setting Jarred's drums up in front of the recently installed stripper's pole. The Mirror's set up in a circle facing one another. I was opposite Matthew, projecting straight onto the wall, air conditioner and three shrunken, 2 week old balloons hanging behind him. The Kids' set-up what was my favourite "stage" of the night, cramming themselves and their gear into one of the venues 6 booths. Huddled inside the booth, the crowd purched themselves on the booth looking in on the awesomeness, or, as in my case, found themselves sitting at the foot of Chad's drum-kit. It was a great alternate perspective to witness one of my favourite bands from. Beside's the "no stage" thing working out wonderfully the "no PA" thing worked out just as well. Each band sounded great, the only exception to this been when I did a song with tennyson and yelled into a microphone and fell around silently, lost in the sound of the guitars and drums. The crowd for the night was fantastic - hardly the biggest I've seen at a show this year, but surely one of the most attentive. It seemed everyone there was hanging off every note of every performance. All in all, it was a really really really special show.

On Friday night I rolled through to Kitchener's pretty early. We'd be celebrating Colleen's birthday, and what an awesome celebration it turned out to be. Personally my night was high lighted by colourful rope-lights, hoola-hooping and Shady-Laneing. At 12 PM my lovely group of friends pointed out that technically, Colleen's birthday was over and (it now being the 18th) my birthday had begun! Cue cheering and high fives and hugs and phone calls from Anja in Namibia to me on the side of the street. Awesome times. I stayed out pretty late, then returned home, then slept, then woke up and then had my birthday! It started out a little frantic, driving around and buying things to make people full of food/ drunk. Still, by 2:30 I'd made all the preparations I needed to make and put on my shorts to take a quick swim. Stepping outside, this first moment of freedom seemed to synchonise with my first guests arriving as Christian and Liam rolled into our driveway. Cue Ben and Christian swimming around, Liam trying to take photos of us underwater, Ben and Liam chopping up fruit for punch, Christian making a fire and more friends gradually arriving. Fast-forward a little. Cue Cam cooking food on a fire, Ri and Leeny making awesome salad and people giving me presents so awesome they made me jump up and down and emit high pitched squeals of joy. Fast-forward. Cue an incredibly delicious cake organised by Anja on the table. Que everyone singing "happy birthday to Ben" and me assaulting the Anja present with a tablespoon and forcing as much of it into my cake-hole as possible before the song was over. Cue us taking the rest of the cake (plus a few slices of fantastic Colleen-baked vegan cake), placing little pieces in wafer cupcake shells, putting ice-cream on top and then covering them with pink sprinkles. Now cue everyone sticking these little cakeandicecreamsprinklecupcakes into their respective cake-holes.

Fast-forward. Cue Shawn being hella drunk and dancing for several minutes to music in his head. FF. Cue Liam and Christian leaving the party at 2:30AM - exactly 12 hours after they arrived. Cue Alice only arriving at around the same time, but staying up with us till after 4. Cue us watching Darkplace, running through Limbo, eating pizza and pretending we're Sex Bob-Omb and Rammy. Fast-forward. I am asleep and dreaming about nice things. Fast-forward. Sibs and Dizzy have stayed the night so we spend our Sunday watching a bunch of youtube clips and eating left over pizza. The kids are kind enough to let me break out my birthday present from Anja, the surreal, funny, totally kick-ass freak-show that is Bayonetta. Now, heading towards the most wonderful, post-birthday, birthday present that I've ever had, fast forward to us driving to Kitcheners. Cue us listening to Ri play some really lovely records. Then, me having a big smile spread all over my face when I discover the awesome that is an acoustic singer/ songwriter called JP Redpath. Fast forward to that smile becoming a colossal grin while I watch Us Kids Know play what really really could be my favourite performance I've ever seen them play.

Let me point out that I don't make a statement like that lightly. Since their first show in the parking-lot of the original Canned Applause I have seen UKK play a bunch of shows that have left me giddy with excitement. The surprise dance-party of an animal right event at Horror Cafe, the band in Animal suits opening Sovereign Halloween, this magical launch party for Problems and the band working a tent of 2000 people into a frenzy at Pandafest - I have seen the dudes play some seriously awe-inspiring shows. But Sunday evening was just perfection.

With the sun sinking and dusk pouring into the windows of Kitchener's, fairy lights running all over the drums and amps, the sound perfectly clear and warm, the setting couldn't have been better. Top all that off with Cam (for the first time ever) playing along with the band all the way through the set and you've got a wonderful show. Add to this the band debuting a super-awesome new song called Parachute Pants and you've got a show so special it feels like the best thing that anyone's ever given me the day after my birthday.

After the show I race home to my new temporary girlfriend with shotguns on her feet. I have tons of fun turning her hair into a giant dog monster, but eventually the call of my bed is too much and I bring this really good weekend to a close.
And now...
Cue you doing something other than reading about Ben's birthday extravaganza!
