You are invited: gateway Drugs Farewell

This weekend I'll be playing a pretty special show; one where we'll be saying farewell to one of the best musical projects South Africa has seen over the past few years. Gateway Drugs, The Cape Town kings of synth-pop, are calling it a day.

This is pretty heavy news. The Drugs have soundtracked some of my favourite moments over the past few years. From that time I used their song in that Michel Gondry video to the time they turned me into a sweaty mess on the Kitchener's dancefloor, these songs and I have had some grand times together. I'm pretty grateful that I get to be around on the night where they're played for the (let's hope not really) last time.

The farewell gig should be a pretty great one, with support from some of the best DJs the city has to offer. I'll be playing some records as Sassquatch, and playing some visuals with the band. Shit's gonna get emotional.

JOHNNY FOREIGNER ARE COMING HOME!

Johnny Foreigner are a noisy, fun band of magicians who I've shared many of the best moments of my life with. There was that time they came to South Africa in 2010 and there was that time we toured through The States in a Winnebago and that time we toured Europe and I documented everything and that time we went back to America and I documented nothing and then that time we traveled through the UK earlier this year.

I'm incredibly happy to announce we'll be adding to this list of adventures. Jo Fo are coming back to SA in October, aptly in time for Halloween. In putting the tour together, I've teamed up with my super-pal Henk from Not Bad. We've got a really fantastic set of dates lined up, and everyone's understandably mega-excited.

RSVP here!

Tell your friends!

Loads of details and updates and news to follow. We've got some really fun creative projects planned for the build up to the tour and the shows themselves.

The Batelur Moves On!

Next Friday I'll be putting on my Sassquatch suit for a very special night out.

Joburg's (absolute) finest, The Brother Moves On, are making a trip down to Cape Town. In turn, The Mother City's (scientifically-proven) greatest band, Bateleur have invited TBMO to team up with them in ripping apart the the fabric of reality at Manilla Bar next Friday. Supporting these guitar-wielding titans, a lovely sellection of support acts have been assembled in the form of Cutting Gems, Seferino, Haus DJs and your friendly neighborhood Sassquatch. Needless to say, this is going to be sheer magic.

Dune Rats UK/ Euro tour 2014!

This is pretty long overdue, but I guess it's better late than never right?

Following on their most excellent tour of South Africa, Australia's Dune Rats made their way North for a string of dates across The UK and Europe. I was asked to do a poster for the tour. I had tons of fun putting something together for this and here's how the it turned out.

Only a few dates left on this, but if you're in one of the last 3 cities, I highly recommend you check these guys out!

Dune Rats return to Hi5!

Last year, at one of our first Hi5 nights, we hosted an Australian band, playing their first show on Africa soil. The resulting show was pure carnage of the most excellent variety, and the Dune Rats went on to enjoy much more of the same across the rest of their first tour of South Africa.

As I write this, The Rats are floating above the surface of the earth, hurtling towards us at phenomenal speeds. Tomorrow night they'll be making their return to Hi5 and we couldn't possibly be any happier for it. Supporting The Dunies, we have Joburgs own prog-surf dynamos; The Moths, plus DJ sets from Hi5's 3 dads, Nathan Scott Phillips, Plaat Japie & Sassquatch!

You are invited to be a party animal!

This Friday I'll be involved in a rediculously exciting gig!

Jose Cuervo are bringing over two great acts; power-pop superheroes The Subways (in full rock and roll glory) and 90ies alt-hop legends, The Fun Lovin' Criminals (in their deadly awesome DJ form)!

What's more, a stupid awesome collection of local acts have been summoned to support these two. I really can't get over just how many of my favourites have been crammed into one bill - it's gonna be incredible!

I'll be lucky enough to contribute to these good times twice over the course of the night! First, spinning records as DJ Sassquatch and seconds spinning in circles with Kidofdoom. This is the final show we have lined up for our rather drawn our reunion tour, so will be pretty bitter sweet for me, but we honestly couldn't ask for a better big bang to go out on.

Tickets are set at the ludicrously low price of R100 - get em here!

Your invited to Hello Ambasador!

I've got a very eventful weekend on the horizon with a whole bunch of awesome stuff going down. I'll be you to all these awesome stuff and first, we've got something very special!
Hello Ambassador will be Pretoria's very first creative confrence! Taking place in the city's State Theater, the organisers have assembled a fantastic, diverse collection of local creatives to speak at the event. Including...
... me!

This is the first time I'll be speaking at an event of this kind and I'm really looking forward to chating about VJing and throwing parties and animating stuff and playing shows and releasing music and drawing kittens. I am up on Saturday afternoon. Here's the full lineup.

After the conference, there's gonna be an epic roof top after party.

The Make Overs are playing which should tell you everything you need to know. (If not, what you need to know is this is gonna be awesome.)

You are invited to Yoh! Under the Sea!

On Saturday night I'm playing the next Joburg edition of Yoh!

The Cape Town based cross-medium monsters have (amongst other things) been throwing a steady stream of super fun nights that combine film appreciation with unhinged dance-floor antics. Recently starting spreading out to start throwing nights in Jozi, I'm really stoked to be part of their next Gauteng episode; "Under The Sea"!

You are invited to see Kidofdoom return to Pretoria!

Following on a pair of amazing reunion show in Cape Town and Joburg a few weeks back, on Friday night Kidofdoom are getting back together for one night of carnage in their hometown of Pretoria. I'll again be joining the band on visual duties and couldn't be more excited for this one. The line up this time round is all kinds of awesome, with highlights coming in the form of The Watermark High and Breakfast, which is the brand new DJ persona of Vampire 9000!

As well as performing with the main attraction myself, my own band Eyes Like Mirrors will be playing in support of Kidofdoom as well. While we're all super excited to be supporting the instrumental titans, Friday's show is going to be bittersweet for us. Friday night will mark ELM's final show before we go on a hiatus. Our guitarist Jason will soon be relocating to Europe for a bit and while this doesn't mean it's the end of Eyes Like Mirrors, you surely won't be able to catch us live again until next year at the soonest. But, setting aside any sadness about the end of this chapter, we couldn't ask for a more awesome night to go out on. Friday night is gonna be amazing!

Back from the grave...

Okay, so I died a small internet death about 10 days back. My last post was probably the most poorly drawn frame of SMAC comics so far. In it, I cried about not getting through the long list of stuff I had been wanting to post on my first Excite Bike Rampage. The good news is I'm back from the grave, with more exciting stuff going down!

ONE:

TWO:
KIDOFDOOM HAVE ALSO RISEN FROM THE GRAVE!

The first two reunion shows this weekend were magic. I can't explain how happy it made me to be able to share a stage with these humans again. My only wish is that somehow Peter Rodda could have somehow teleported over to join us on lights. The great part is there's more Doom to look forward to. The next show of the reunion tour is also the band's home coming playing Pretoria's Arcade Empire on the 12th of July!

THREE:
NEXT HI5 LIVE IS THIS THURSDAY!

Hi5 Thursdays, our new weekly series has been going great! A little less than two months old and we've already had some really fantastic nights. Our next episode promises to be yet another stellar Thursday as we host Joburg beat-ninja The Watermark High and Cape Town's Diamond Thug, up touring Gauteng for the first time!

KIDOFDOOM ARE BACK!

There's a long gushy stream of words that comes along with this news, but with this #excitebike business pushing me forward, I don't have the time to get them all out. So take this as the micro-machine version of this monsterously good news.

KIDOFDOOM ARE COMING BACK!

This band have been one of the biggest things in my life. With them, I shared some of my happiest moments on this earth. You can click here for some of those moments that were documented on this blog. At the time it was clear the band wouldn't be continuing in the way it had I was pretty shattered.

But, after a long break, The Doomers are back! They have an awesome collection of dates planned around their triumphant return.
I'm very happy to announce I will be joining the band on visuals for the first two dates of the tour!

CAPE TOWN!

JOBURG

Both these shows are going to be incredibly special nights - so prepare yourselves, spread the word and see you there!

You are invited to even more awesome stuff!

It's actually a bit too much; I've been busy since Monday crafting a huge post about everything that happened over last week. The second half of the Dune Rats tour was just great and I had the DJ set of my life at Sowing the Seeds and all this other awesome stuff happened in between all that. I'm working on a post that does it all justice but damn! It's just too much! Especially with trying to juggle actual work as well - it's taking ages! So I'm quickly jumping ahead, letting you know about what new adventures you can join me on over the next three days!

Tonight, Ri and I are trying something new with our regular Thursday night party, Hi5! This Thursday will mark the first Hi5 Lounge! The idea is, the last Hi5 of each month will be a free hang-out where Ri and I play whatever we want and get our friends in to come DJ with us. If you'd like to be one of those friends, grab some CDs, swing by Kitcheners tonight come kick out the jams with us!

Then on Friday, Eyes Like Mirrors are making our return to our favourite venue in the city, the awesome Bioscope Independent Cinema! This the the most perfect place for us to do our cinema-rock thing and what more we're return to the Bioscope as part of a fantastic lineup of bands. Expect all kinds of audio-visual magic from A Skyline on Fire and The Watermark High who we're supporting! Really can't wait for this one!

Then on Saturday, it's time for Untamed Youth! It's really no secret just how much love I have for these cross-city disco freakouts. That said, I am especially excited for this next episode because I'll be going head to head with Data Takashi, the CDJ-wizard that was my full time partner back when I started DJing in 2005! Beyond the Sassquatch vs Data Takashi reunion, the lineup for this episode of Untamed Youth is solid gold from start to finish. You'd be pretty foolish to miss this!

Well, that's what I'm looking forward to - hoping to let you know about last weeks awesomeness before all this hits. Fingers crossed that i can pull that off!
