You are invited! Let's kiss and make up!

The night I get back to Johannesburg Ri and I will be throwing the next party in our "High Five Records" series. I can't wait for this!
Vol. 4: HIGH FIVE RECORDS compile a TWEE AS FUCK party. A post-anorak tribute to the underground's softer, sweeter, gooeyer side. An uncovering of the roots of indie pop as well as a celebration of all that NME's mixtape "C86" has inspired over the many years. Let's party like we're the fresh kids on the Cutie scene. Be pop geeks, fall in love with all the pretty things. Exchange mixtapes like loveletters filled with rainbows and sunshine, out-of-tune innocence, heartache and regret. Sixties pop jangle, girl-group bubblegum hum, bratty guitar buzz, summer in Sweden - pure, perfect pop! "Let's Kiss and make up."

Jo Fo Euro. Day 10. Lausanne

We head out of Berlin pretty early. The drive to Switzerland is really long, but i pass out for most of it.

I finally wake up and find us traveling through darkness, stressing about how epically long the drive has turned out to be and how ridiculously late we are for soundcheck as a result.

As we start approaching the location we'll be playing I begin to grasp the magnitude of the festival we're playing. It's not just some music festival with a few bands and stages, it's a full blown traditional festival with thousands of people flooding the streets, dozens of little tents and stalls and flashing lights scattered between them. Some people from the stage we're playing show up and start clearing people out of the way to get our us to the venue. Our little van swims through the flood of people. It feels a little like we're in The Beatles or something, as people (with no idea who we are) swarm around us, blow tubas into the windows, bang on the van and generally act like drunken festival folk in animal suits. After fighting our way through the crowds we eventually make it to the venue. They're super accommodating to us late ghosts and while the kids quickly soundcheck I get my visuals running into the projector and huge screen they've got waiting for me.

Fast forward to us backstage. I discover we're supporting US noise fanatics Parts and Labour tonight! Fuck yeah.

Fast forward to us on stage, having the best time and Nestor taking some pretty neat photos of us doing our thing.

Fast forward back to us backstage, being fed some insanely good mustard coconut chicken thing.

Fast forward to watching Parts and Labour and seeing them doing something quite unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Fast forward to chatting to one of the Laborers about his visit to South Africa, our BLK JKS and how they're kinda labelmates with Parts and Labour through the Jagjaguwar/ Secretly Canadian connection.

Fast forward to us dragging our bags down the beautiful night streets of Lausanne, seeing weird statues on creepy buildings and photographing posters for Brian Jonestown Massacre gigs. We land up in the flat of the promoter, who turns out to have put together gigs for Eyes Like Mirrors favorite Maserati in the past and her next show will be headlined by Foreigner favorite Algernon Cadwaller. Turns out that in conjunction with doing shows for bands we love she's also into pretty much all the bands that make our hearts melt and brains want to explode.

We stay up till crazy late, freaking out over Owls, Knapsack, Rooftops, missing the sound of Dischord records, the news that there's a new Sea and Cake and we can get the Mock Orange album that tragically, mysteriously disappeared of Jun's iPhone.

Sometime after 4 I find myself falling asleep, the beautiful sound of The Van Pelt bleeding through the walls and into my sleepy Benhead.

Free Mix Friday: Commodore 64 and Shady Lane go 90ies!

Shady Lane and Commodore 64 are two of my favourite DJs in Johannesburg right now. They also happen to be 2 of the 4 voices behind the wonderful music blog, Sad Birthdays. Recently the both DJs released 90ies themed mixes which you can download right here, right now!

Jo Fo Euro. Day 9. Day off - Kiel to Berlin

On the 9th day of the tour we were supposed to be play Leiden in Holland. Unfortunately, by this time we've come to the realisation that the way this tour has been planned out, it seems as if our booking agent took a map of Europe and threw darts at it to see where we'd be playing each day.
So, having only left the country for Germany yesterday, we should now be driving back to Amsterdam before we drive to all the way to Switzerland tomorrow. But (since the promoters of the Leiden show can't even guarantee they'll be able to pay us enough to cover the cost of all the petrol we'll have to use to get there and back) we've very begrudginly been forced to cancel the show. What this does mean is the total drive to Switzerland will be a good few hours shorter, we can do the trip in two days and can hang out in Kiel for a bit...
...and go to the beach.
After beach times and getting supplies at a music store we hit the road.
This goes swimingly for a few hours until our van is hit by a truck on the autobahn. It's a pretty damn shitty disaster, but the way it goes down seems like divine intervention. A half seconds difference could have meant the van been written off, the death of Lex or maybe all 6 of us. Instead the truck just clips us, taking a nice clean chunk off the front left side of the van, politely leaving our headlight and side indicator in perfect working order and van still totally roadworthy.
Much like with our winnebago-related mishap in the USA last year, the accident is followed by us spending some time somewhere really pretty.
After catching some sun and our breaths we get back in the van. Sit in terrible traffic forever and only get to our halfway point in Berlin at midnight. Check into our hotel and crash into our pillows.

Jo Fo Euro. Day 8. Kiel

Woke up in this really bizarre hostel room in Rotterdam. Forgot to get photos of the teacups glued to the ceiling and bizzare dolls on the walls. Only remembered my camera when we got outside.
Left the port of Rotterdam...
and drove through to Kiel in Germany.
The kids at the venue hooked us up with all kinds of awesome food and drinks...
...and toy robot!
We soundchecked, went for a walk and then stumbled across this awesome park.
Rushed back to the venue to catch Der Kosmos, an awesome hybrid between Tok Vek, Passion Pit and German-ness
And then we did that thing we do and it was tons of fun.
