You are invited to The Hi5 Cosmic Caravan!

The tenth episode of Hi5 is around the corner and we've got an extra special party planned for this one!

Griet have invited us to take over their Caravan Stage at this year's Grietfest. We've picked out a great collection of DJs to play said caravan and have drawn up some crazy decor and lighting plans to transform it into "The Cosmic Caravan". Can't wait for this one!

You are invited to Rebel Alliance 7

Rebel Alliance is all about one thing: breaking the rules. With that in mind, we're breaking our own.

For this month's installment of Rebel Alliance, we're breaking away from having a live band in the Bioscope. instead, we're proud to present to you 3 mini-sets from 3 of the ciy's most wild VJs. Drawing inspiration from their favourite TV-shows, these VJs will each perform a 15 minute power set, soundtracked by a pre-recorded mix by a DJ friend. Prepare your optic receptors for visual bliss from my minds of:

CHINXXX
(soundtrack by Marc Latilla)

DERRICK PITTS
(soundtrack by Casioheart)

BEN RAUSCH
(soundtrack by Sassquatch)

For the non live section of the night, we will be screening SHORTY SHORTS! This special selection of surreal/ spook/ sci-fi animations, clips, experiments and LOLs, has been hand-crafted and hand-picked by some of the finest rebels the alliance has to offer including:

Lindi Goosen, Patrick Dinneen, Awewolves, Phil Davies, Doktrine, Matt McFarlane, Stuart Coutts, Karien Goosen, PJ Kotze, Alex van Rensburg, Matt Suttner and other purveyors of fine bite-sized weirdness!

If you have made (or simply love) something that you'd like shown as a part of Shorty Shorts, mail suggestions to benrausch@gmail.com.

Doors open: 8PM

You are invited to "Jukebox: The best of high five records"

Over the course of a year, we threw 12 High 5 parties, each themed to a very different sub-genre of the wide wide world of rock & roll. Each party was presented as an imaginary compilation, the "tracklisting" of which, was the lineup of the night. Generally this was Ri & I, plus 3 of our favorite DJs. Over the course of each night, 7 and a half hours of dancing were divided up by that month's "High Five".

On Saturday the 17th we'll be hosting "Jukebox - The Best of High Five Records!" a wrap-up event to celebrate the end of the series! Sonically, the night will span the full extent of all the genre's explored over all 12 installments of the series, from swing to surf, proto-punk to post-punk, 50ies soul to 80ies new wave to 90ies indie. The real surprise is, breaking away from our formula of 5 DJs in 7 and a half hours, we won't have a "High Five" , but rather a "High Fifteen"!!! Yes, we are being as ambitious and crazy that we think we can squeeze 15 DJs into 1 lineup and what's more we think it's gonna work out pretty damn well!

If you're wondering about the maths, we have 7 and a half hours from 8:30PM - 4AM, a total of 450 minutes. Divided by our 15 DJs, it leaves each DJ with a power set of 30 minutes each. Whether they try fit 20 doo wop hits into that time, or would rather just play two epic disco jams for the whole set, that's totally up to them. Seeing what people do with a micro set like this and the madness of giving the dancefloor a new selector every 30 minutes, we think this is gonna make for one of the most fun, crazy nights-out that Joburg has seen in ages!

Love will tear us apart.

Hard to believe, but it's already time for the 12th and final entry in High-5's compilation series. Over the past year, through parties dressed up as imaginary compilation records, High Five has explored the vast oceans of dance-floor ready rock and roll from surf and swing to garage-rock and funk. For the final episode of this series, we're happy to present to you a night dedicated to one of the most explosive chapters of rock and roll history. This month's High Five DJs have been hand picked to provide you with a near lethal dose of raw-power from the pioneers of post-punk & new-wave plus numbers from the modern day athlete's that carry the torch those forefather's lit more than 30 years ago.

You are invited: Electric Affair "Beardo Weirdo"

The King of Town in back in town! A total pioneer, former amazing event designer, super-producer and quite possibly the best DJ to emerge from our generation of Gauteng DJs, King of Town changed the face of South African nightlife from when he started "The Secret" sometime in 2004 until he left Jozi for London in 2009. His remix of "Kiss You" launched Desmond and the Tutus into the international spotlight and since then has been commissioned to remix artists ranging from Wild Beats and Franz Ferdinand to Phenomenal Handclap Band.

On Friday The King will be coming home for a few days. Under the guise of Paul Holden he'll be launching his latest book, and while he's back in town we thought we'd throw a little party.

More than two years back Marc Latilla suggested he and I should throw a disco party. The Electric Affair was born and with King of Town and Young Smuts completing the lineup, our debut night turned out to be a huge success. We always wanted to do a follow-up party, but circumstance always seemed to be against us. Now, years down the line, I'm really happy that we're finally making it happen. Tragically Latilla isn't able to join us this time around, but with Data Takashi filing in for him it's still a totally solid lineup of disco-loving-DJs!

Good Weekend: Skim Grot en die Deurskeinende Stede

Gauteng is on a roll with hooking Anja and I up with really good weekends. We don't do much on Friday night, but Saturday starts off with us heading through to Pretoria for Chinese with Maaike & Werner. Om nom nom, then head through to this month's instalment of the Doktrine's amazing Skim Grot.
We drink Kapowerade, buy lovely Mikado stickers for Seafox's case and I have the great pleasure of DJing through sunset over an awesome view of my hometown and the cool kids that have come to this very special event.
After my set we need to race through to Joburg for Kick out the Jams. before tha party starts, I need to give The KRNGY DJs a crash course in DJing. I'm pleasantly surprised to discover Jaco is joining Andreas and Martinique, meaning we're now lucky enough to have 3 of the 4 Sticky Antlers opening our garage rock party up. The kids play a totally awesome set; the boys each grab a CDJ while Martinique uses her laptop to trigger old movie samples between tracks.
It's just perfect. A totally swell crowd show up to rock out with us and by the time we head home at 4ish the night has surely earned the name "High Five".
It's a little tough dragging ourselves out of bed on Sunday, but we do. Head through to the burgeoning Maboneng district of the CBD. Last weekend we were here for the awesome Fete De La Musique, today it's Invisible Cities that has dragged us into the heart of Jozi.
It's totally awesome what Skeleton Crew are doing with these events. Throwing Sunday afternoon gigs, combining musical-polar-opposites, presenting people with something new and different and celebrating just how lucky we all are to live in a city like Johannesburg.
Bless you Skeleton Crew.
Blew.
