This Friday I'll be involved in a rediculously exciting gig!

Jose Cuervo are bringing over two great acts; power-pop superheroes The Subways (in full rock and roll glory) and 90ies alt-hop legends, The Fun Lovin' Criminals (in their deadly awesome DJ form)!

What's more, a stupid awesome collection of local acts have been summoned to support these two. I really can't get over just how many of my favourites have been crammed into one bill - it's gonna be incredible!

I'll be lucky enough to contribute to these good times twice over the course of the night! First, spinning records as DJ Sassquatch and seconds spinning in circles with Kidofdoom. This is the final show we have lined up for our rather drawn our reunion tour, so will be pretty bitter sweet for me, but we honestly couldn't ask for a better big bang to go out on.

You are invited to see Kidofdoom return to Pretoria!

Following on a pair of amazing reunion show in Cape Town and Joburg a few weeks back, on Friday night Kidofdoom are getting back together for one night of carnage in their hometown of Pretoria. I'll again be joining the band on visual duties and couldn't be more excited for this one. The line up this time round is all kinds of awesome, with highlights coming in the form of The Watermark High and Breakfast, which is the brand new DJ persona of Vampire 9000!

As well as performing with the main attraction myself, my own band Eyes Like Mirrors will be playing in support of Kidofdoom as well. While we're all super excited to be supporting the instrumental titans, Friday's show is going to be bittersweet for us. Friday night will mark ELM's final show before we go on a hiatus. Our guitarist Jason will soon be relocating to Europe for a bit and while this doesn't mean it's the end of Eyes Like Mirrors, you surely won't be able to catch us live again until next year at the soonest. But, setting aside any sadness about the end of this chapter, we couldn't ask for a more awesome night to go out on. Friday night is gonna be amazing!

Days Like Television: Gateway Beach

Coming soon: I'll be finishing up a rather unsual post about the state of live music around the little piece of South Africa this blog has been enthusiastically centered around for the past five years. It's a pretty crazy confusing state of affairs with a whole bunch of factors contributing and effecting what's going on. I don't wanna get into it to much now, because as I say, there's a proper post in the works. And, deathly serious as it will be, it's gonna have comic bits.

While that forthcoming post is gonna take a look at my lineup of suspects, for now let me just say that a collection of sinister forces have murdered live music between Joburg and Pretoria! To our rescue though, my buddy Joe is bringing up 2 shining examples of just how alive and spritely the live music scene is in Cape Town these days!

So Joe phoned me up the other day. He wanted to know if I'd like to visit my hometown and play a set between two of my favourite bands in the country. He wanted to know if I'd like to draw something to get people to come through. This is the result:

I really shouldn't have to tell you how great Beach Party are and less than a week back I made a comic about how much fun I had opening for gateway Drugs the last time. It is probably worthing point out though: the lineup of DJs assembled to support these bands is just great. So basically, you really should come through to this.

There sure is a lot to be excited about going down between Joburg and Pretoria these days! To be honest, I was feeling like things have been dying down for a little while, but the past two weekends have been amazing and now another weekend full of all kinds of awesome looms! And it starts tonight!

Thursday's at Amuse have become the only home for underground live music in JHB. I can't stress enough how great it is to a quality live show going down ever single week. Tonight marks a particularly exciting installment in the series; Jozi's only certified surf-practitioners, The Moths, will be taking the stage! The band will also be joined by Emma Hearne & Kitsch (could have sworn I posted their Hanro Havenga-amazingified video somewhere on SMAC, but for now let me direct you here!) The Moths are up at 8 - so get through to this one early!

Then on Friday night, the oh-so-gangster Untamed Youth returns to The City of Gold! As well as DJ love from We Are Awesome, the night will be graced by a set from Haasbroek, who'll be coming all the way from Cape Town just to give you ear-hugs!

Then, Saturday night is the big one!

It's jiving time with the sole-survivors of South Africa's 2006 indie-rock explosion, Desmond and The Tutus!

It' a party every time these 4 handsome faces take to the stage, but this Saturday at Mihouse is gonna be extra-radical! The band will be celebrating the launch of their killer new album Mnusic! I made it through the Pretorian launch party last weekend and it was a ludicrously fun night. I expect just as much fun this Saturday! Actually, make that "even more fun"!!! For their Joburg launch, the band have asked me to put on my Sassquatch suit and spin a couple of songs after their set! What's more, I'll be playing head to head, with the brightest new light in the Jozi party scene, Half 'n Half. If you've yet to see him behind a pair of decks, this kid is all kinds of awesome, and I can't wait to team up with him!

It's really encouraging to see how some major local brands are getting behind seriously cool events!

One brand showing a lot of sense for what's really cool (and willingness to help make it even cooler) is Bacardi. Last year I played one of their "Better Together" events, a really original concept, celebrating creativity and collaboration. I was lucky enough to be a part of a night brought to life by the brilliance of Louis Minnaar, Yesterday's Pupil & Felicity Steenkamp. In short it was easily the coolest brand event I've ever played.

Now Bacardi are at it again, getting behind one of the brightest stars in the current Jozi-nightlife sky. Half 'n Half Productions are frequently putting together some of the best nights this city sees these days. They book shows for the excellent Fire Through the Window and Short Straw, both of which are playing the event this whole post is supposed to be inviting you too. There's also some extra Joburg flavour in the form of Dance You're on Fire, some exotic spice with Cape Town touring act Holliday Murray and DJ action from Half n Half for desert! On top of all that, the night features firm SMAC favourites Yo Grapes! And most amazing of all BACARDI ARE GIVING YOU THIS HYPER-AWESOME LINEUP FOR FREE! It all seems to good to be true, but this really is going down tomorrow night. There would have to be something seriously wrong with you if you didn't celebrate that.
